Does Eucalyptus Repel Spiders?

Eucalyptus has natural insecticidal properties that are likely capable of repelling spiders, although there is insufficient scientific data on the topic right now.

While there have not been many scientific studies that prove or disprove whether or not eucalyptus trees repel spiders, they have been proven to repel similar insects and anachrids. Therefore, there are positive signs that it may work to repel some spider species as well.

The leaves and bark of these trees can emit an odor that bees use to defend themselves from mosquitoes and other insects. Because of this, these trees are also believed to be able to help ward off spiders.

Does Eucalyptus Repel Spiders

It’s believed that spiders don’t like the eucalyptus smell, so they tend to stay away. Some people have even found spiders floating in water near eucalyptus trees.

As there is insufficient scientific evidence on the topic, we have chosen not to make a recommendation about whether to use eucalyptus as a spider repellent. In general, it’s best to get your local eco-friendly pest control professional to address a spider infestation.

Does Eucalyptus Repel Spiders?

It is widely believed that eucalyptus will repel spiders. Many people choose to plant eucalyptus trees in their home and garden to keep them away.

In the past, people have been told to keep a eucalyptus plant on their porch or on a windowsill to prevent spiders from crawling inside their homes. Many people still believe this regarding eucalyptus trees and spiders.

Eucalyptus might be nature’s secret weapon against spiders. People have used eucalyptus extracts as a natural pesticide, insect repellent, and even a cure for ear infections.

A 2018 study found that essential oils repel insects and inhibits their ability to bite. These oils do this by making the animal nervous and cause it to flee. These oils come from the eucalyptus tree and other plants.

Even though the study tested the effectiveness of three other essential oils, it showed that the essential oils of the eucalyptus tree can also be effective in protecting you and your home from spiders.

Additionally, the study states that the oils cause insects to become weaker and less active. It also says that once they leave, there is no residue left behind and you don’t need to worry about it getting inside your home.

Another study found eucalyptus oil repels many beetles and even kills insect larvae.

In addition, these oils are not toxic like pesticides would be. According to the study, this means that these oils can be safely used inside and outside your home as long as you don’t bathe in them.

Repellent Properties of Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus trees are naturally toxic to many bugs. The reason why the eucalyptus is good at controlling bug populations is that its toxicity works on two levels.

The first reason Eucalyptus is effective at repelling spiders is because of its repellent properties

In nature, they are often scared away by the odor that Eucalyptus leaves emit, which is known as p-menthane methyl (PMM), which smells like rotten cabbage. Supposedly, when spiders are in the area, they are less likely to bite you because they can smell the plant is present.

The second reason why Eucalyptus is believed to be good at repelling spiders is because of its toxicity to them. Since the plant is toxic to many bugs, it is believed at least some spider species will want to stay away from it.

For example, in an experiment conducted in 2018, eucalyptus essential oil was used in an attempt to reach spider populations through their food supply (insects). When spiders ate through cotton balls laced with this essential oil, they died.

Spiders also supposedly don’t like the smell of eucalyptus leaves, so they tend to stay away from your home.

Eucalyptus is supposedly a natural way of getting rid of spiders without having to use harmful pesticides, which can make you and your family sick. Using eucalyptus as an insect repellent may be an eco-friendly way to keep spiders away.

How Do People Use Eucalyptus Oil to get Rid of Spiders?

As there is inconclusive evidence of the effectiveness of eucalyptus oil, we are making no recommendations on whether to use it. But below is an outline of how some people might use it.

1. Placing Eucalyptus Plants on the Windowsill

Some people may choose to put eucalyptus leaves on their windowsill or the borders of their windows so that the smell will go out into the air and scare away any spiders that might come near.

2. Eucalyptus Spray

Alternatively, some people use the eucalyptus essential oil as a spider repellent spray. To do this, they generally mix about ¼ cup of table (processed) sugar with 1/8 cup of eucalyptus essential oil and 1/8 cup of water in a jar.

Once the solution is made, it is applied to surfaces where spiders frequent. This method may require repeated application, though, because its effectiveness will fade rapidly.

3. Store-Bought Essential Oil Solutions

A store-bought solution is always best. It will contain labels explaining safe use and be approved by your local jurisdiction. Several environmentally solutions for spider repellents are available in stores nowadays. Consult your local store for more information.

Is Eucalyptus Oil Safe?

While eucalyptus oil is generally believed to be much safer than most chemical pesticides, it may still pose some dangers to some people.

Eucalyptus essential oils may be harmful to children or pets. Consult a pest control professional about your situation prior to use.

Furthermore, be sure to wash your hands after using eucalyptus essential oils because they can cause skin irritation and could even cause burns. If you have sensitive skin, it is probably best to do this outside and away from your home.

Always follow the instructions on labels prior to use.

There are many myths about eucalyptus trees and spiders, and without further scientific research, there will not be a conclusive answer to the question of whether (and how) eucalyptus repels spiders.

However, it does show promise as a generally lower-risk repellent option.

Overall, until there is better evidence and guidance on how to use eucalyptus oil to repel spiders, the best option is to consult an eco-friendly pest control company in your area.
